Whitmell, a small community in Pittsylvania County, is named for Whitmell Tunstall. It had been called Chestnut Grove prior to acquiring the name of Whitmell in 1853.

We believe this is a relative of the Jones or Yeatts family of Virginia. (It is also possible that she was a Beaver family relative, perhaps from North Carolina, but the Jones/Yeatts connection seems more likely.)

The picture on the front of the postcard is of the Monroe School in Lynchburg, Virginia. If one looks closely, children can be seen in the schoolyard.

Claudia Emerson and Fellow Girl Scouts
Young Girl Scouts visit the office of the Chatham Star-Tribune. The shortest girl, with dark hair, is Claudia Emerson. (Claudia Emerson was the Poet Laureate of Virginia.)

In the early 1900s, B.L. Dearing was a photographer in Chatham, Virginia. His studio was located in his house on Reid Street (behind the present-day post office on Main Street).
It is believed that this photograph was taken in his studio in Chatham. Mr. Dearing was looking into a mirror when he took this shot.
